Education was mainly in the hands of the monastaries, but with the founding of Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the early 13th Century there was something of a Medieval Renaissance. Not everyone had access to this education, however it is reasonable that characters in Perfect Shadows are aware of major events of the last hundred years or so, and that they know a little something about the English kings since 1066, even if it's just their names.
