"It is a glorious thing to 'stablish peace,
And kings approach the nearest unto God
By giving life and safety unto men."
Edward III, William Shakespeare
With the capture of David II and the Earl of Moray the English assumed that the Scottish threat had been neutralised, but the return of Margaret de Bruce to Scotland and the coming of age of her son, Robert Stewart, have strengthened the resolve (and belligerence) of their people. War and conflict seem inevitable, but the Guardian of Scotland has accepted an invitation to talk of peace with England. Stakes are high.
If talk fails England faces invasion whilst their armies are divided between the border and France. If talk fails, the Scottish face the death of their King at the hands of their oldest, bitterest enemies. In war, however, there is glory and esteem to be won for self and for king and country, and reputations to be made or broken. The European powers watch for the results with interest. France has the most to win or lose, with allies in Scotland and war with England, but the outcome could cause unexpected ripples throughout.
On the eve of the peacetalks the main players and their attendants plan to come together in a remarkable show of support for the effort. Everything may depend on the outcome of this one evening.
